The 2nd Largest Metro Area in the Pacific
The city of Vancouver is located in the lower mainland of British Columbia. The coastal city is a major Canadian seaport and one of the largest cities in British Columbia. It is recognized as the second largest metropolitan area in the Pacific. The city’s population has really grown in the past thirty years from 1 million to over 2 million people. Vancouver is also documented as one of British Columbia’s youngest cities, founded in the late 1800s. Most people think of French when discussing the main Canadian language. However, the Chinese happen to be the largest visible ethnic group on this side of the country. Vancouver is said to have one of the most diverse Chinese speaking communities in British Columbia. Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese are two of the dialects spoken here. English is also spoken here. In order to cater to both languages, there are three Chinese-language papers, several newspapers written in the English language and television stations that show programs in either language. Tourism is big in Vancouver. The Jericho beach is a popular hotspot for many visitors. The beach is described as a long, sandy stretch of land with views of the glorious mountains as well as the downtown area. A large number of tourist visit Jericho beach and perform activities like barbecuing, swimming and going on picnics. The Jericho beach is also known as a great spot for sailing, surfing and kayaking. The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Center is another well-liked hotspot for tourists, especially those with children. This aquarium is said to be one of the biggest aquariums in North America. The center is home to over 7,000 aquatic animals. The display of creatures also contains a living exhibit that acts out issues that face marine life in the Strait of Georgia. The orca, dolphin, and white whale shows are the center’s main attraction. The cost and standard of living in Vancouver is rated highly. Living in the city can be very expensive. It is noted as being one of the least affordable cities in the world and holds some of Canada’s highest prices for housing. A 1,000 square foot, two bedroom home built in the 1950s can cost as much as $162,000 while $5,000,000 can get you a spacious ten bedroom home. Despite Vancouver’s high cost of living it has been ranked as one of the three most livable cities in the whole world. Vancouver is ranked as having the fourth highest quality of living in the world. The climate is surprisingly temperate and according to Canada’s Department of the Environment, its winters are the fourth warmest of all the Canadian cities. However, summer months are a time for droughts being that this time of years tends to be extremely dry; on the other hand, winters tend to be rainy. The 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics are scheduled to be held in Vancouver. This will be the third Olympics hosted in Canada but the first Olympics to be hosted by British Columbia. The other two Olympics were held in the summer of 1976 and the winter of 1988. For more information on Vancouver, visit http://vancouvermicroblog.com and http://microblogvancouver.com
