3 Great Cities For Getting Outdoors

Getting outside on a regular basis is unfortunately, something that many of us fail to do. Whether the goal is to enjoy the natural world, exercise, or simply take advantage of al fresco activities, here are three cities that are sure to entice you out into the open!

Albuquerque, NM – Situated in a stunning natural setting, backed up to the ruggedly beautiful Sandia Mountains and built along the mighty Rio Grande, Albuquerque is full of outdoor opportunities. Its sunny dry climate make it perfect for every outdoor sport imaginable, and with an average of over 300 sunny days a year, you’re sure to get all of your favorites in. Trails for walking, hiking, and cycling run throughout Albuquerque and of course there are even more in the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. Rock climbing and horseback riding are favorite local pastimes. Winter sports enthusiasts can take advantage of skiing and snowboarding on Pajarito Mountain or the challenging Sandia Peak.

In recent years Albuquerque has been cited for being both pro-dog and pro-cycling, there are 12 dog parks and over 400 miles of bike paths and trails. Albuquerque is also known as the “Capital of Ballooning”. Numerous hot-air balloon events take place annually, and there’s even a museum dedicated to the sport.

Outdoor fun does not end with sporting activities. The city’s ABQ BioPark is home to an aquarium, botanical gardens, a zoo, and Tingely Beach, which lies along the banks of the Rio Grande. You can even kill two birds with one stone when you take in Old Town Albuquerque, with street dances, fairs, walking tours and a farmer’s market that features live music.

Little Rock, AR – Nicknamed “Rock Town”, Little Rock’s citywide goal for becoming known instead as the “City in a Park”, is quickly becoming a reality. Its parks system has been nationally recognized and soon the River Trail will be completed. The 24 miles of walking and biking trails will connect with the 225-mile Ouachita Wilderness Trail in Pinnacle Mountain Park. The Arkansas Arboretum is also located at Pinnacle Mountain and features lovely trails overflowing with southern flora and fauna.

Arkansas’s mild climate makes outdoor sports possible year round, and there are excellent facilities throughout Little Rock for everything from baseball to golf to tennis. Equestrians love it here too, thanks to an ample number of stables and trails. Along with an impressive number of parks and open spaces, the Arkansas River is a world-class destination for fishing and boating. Several area lakes are also favorite destinations for sailing and swimming.

Getting outside in Little Rock can also be very entertaining. The open air Wildwood Park is the largest performing arts park in the south and is a venue for a variety of musical and theatrical performances.

Santa Barbara, CA – Enjoying the great outdoors is impossible not to do here in the “American Rivera”. Typical of southern California, Santa Barbara has miles of tempting coastline and picture perfect weather that ensures you’ll give into those temptations! Of course all of the usual SoCal diversions are here, from body boarding to surfing, plus kite boarding, kayaking and paddle boarding. Its unique downtown beaches, 50 public parks and picnic areas truly make it hard to focus on the daily 9 to 5 grind. Whether it’s a relaxing walk through the gardens at Alameda Park or whale watching at Shoreline Park, outdoor options abound. History buffs can enjoy a breath of fresh air and then take in the Chumash Painted Cave State Park. Those up for a physical challenge can hike along Rattlesnake Canyon or make the trek to the hot springs at Gaviota Peak.

Santa Barbara’s charming neighborhoods and downtown areas also beckon you to come out and play! Outdoor endeavors requiring physical exertion can be pushed aside for more relaxing pursuits such as strolling along Stearns Wharf, taking in outdoor concerts, wine country tours, and open air shopping. With so many wonderful open air options, it is not surprising that Santa Barbara has also been recognized as a pedestrian friendly city for both commuters and recreational walkers.
