5 Dog Friendly US Cities

Planning a move but want to make sure it’s the kind of place that your canine family members will love? A little research reveals that a large number of American cities are striving to be dog friendly destinations. Which one is right for you and your best friend?

Boston, MA – Settled in 1630, Boston is one of our country’s oldest and most historic cities. If you’re visiting Boston in hopes of finding the perfect house, relax in knowing that an impressive number of Boston hotels allow dogs. Even hotels in the more upscale areas around Beacon Street, Boston Harbor and areas of Cambridge welcome well-behaved furry friends. For Boston residents, maneuvering around town with their leashed companions is a piece of cake. The Boston T subway line allows both large and small dogs. Numerous water taxis and ferries also permit tail-wagging passengers, including the Salem Ferry catamaran, which makes the 45-minute trip to Salem, MA from Boston Harbor. Both you and your dog will enjoy boning up on Boston history on the Freedom Trail and Black Heritage Trail walking tours. Leashed, well-behaved dogs can also take a step back in time and see the city from a horse and carriage tour. The historic, tree-lined, sweeping campus greenways of both Harvard University and Boston College are excellent choices for a poochie picnic. Elsewhere around Beantown, there are 5 off-leash parks and Carson Beach where leashed dogs can play in the surf from October until the end of May. Shopoholics will be pleased to know that several stores in downtown Boston love their pawed customers and there are quite a few pet boutiques and doggie bakeries to explore. Many of Boston’s eating establishments, such as Joe’s American Bar & Grill and the Salty Dog Seafood Grille, can seat canine companions outside with their owners for world-class people watching and al fresco dining.

Chicago, IL – Since one of the Windy City’s most famous residents, Oprah Winfrey, is a tremendous dog fan, it seems the rest of the city is following suit. As one of the world’s top ten Global Financial Centers, it is not surprising that Chicago is keeping up with the demands of thousands of resident dog owners. A fair amount of Chicagoland hotels and inns allow four-footed guests, as do many of the city’s open-air restaurants and cafes. There are two dog friendly beaches-Montrose Dog Beach has a fenced in area with plenty of room for games of catch and trotting through the surf, and Belmont Harbor Beach is another great spot. Chicago also boasts over 20 dog parks, including areas along Lake Shore Drive and the famous Grant Park, plus 12 trails and greenways where leashed, well-behaved canines are always welcome. If your best friend is the nautical type you can also enjoy dog-friendly kayaking, canoeing, and boat tours of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Chicago White Sox fans can share their love of the game with their mutts on the team’s annual “Dog Day” at the ballpark. Apparently many Chicago restaurants are owned by dog lovers, which may explain things why there are several Doggy Happy Hours throughout the city.

San Antonio, TX – As the 7th largest city in the country, San Antonio serves as home to a substantial number of hi-tech giants and five Fortune 500 companies. Its picture perfect weather and sprawling metro areas make it a natural for dog owners and the ones they love. Over 100 hotels, motels, inns, and campgrounds proudly advertise the fact they are dog friendly, which is a big help to anyone in town searching for a new home. San Antonio has nine parks conveniently spread throughout the city and three of them are sizeable off leash dog parks. After The Alamo, the second most popular attraction in all of TX is San Antonio’s Riverwalk, and leashed, well-behaved canine pals are welcome to stroll along the entire two-mile stretch. The warm sunny weather makes outdoor dining especially feasible and fortunately the vast majority of dining establishments allow dogs to accompany their owners at outside seating. Several major attractions, like The Alamo and the Shooting Star Museum will allow your four-legged friend to tour the outside grounds, but not the inside. Six Flags Fiesta TX and Sea World both provide kennel space. Another San Antonio institution is El Mercado, the largest Mexican marketplace outside of Mexico. Dogs love the sights and sounds there and on many weekends there’s live music. What dog wouldn’t love a tiny sombrero or tasty chicken tamale?

San Diego, CA – Nicknamed “America’s Finest City”, San Diego is a premier destination for dogs and their owners. Between the idyllic climate and the laid back, unpretentious SoCal attitude, San Diego could be also nicknamed, “Dogtown”. If you are contemplating a move to San Diego and concerned about how your dog will fare, don’t give it a second thought. Dog friendly accommodations are as plentiful as the SoCal swells. When Fido goes coastal at one of the city’s three dog beaches, there’ll be no turning back. There’s no excuse to keep your pooch from enjoying himself, because there is even a Dog Beach Dog Wash to keep the salt and sand out of your car. Lack of exercise won’t be a problem for either of you since San Diego has twenty off-leash dog parks and a variety of trails along tidal pools, mountain vistas, and canyons. Dogs who love a bargain are also allowed to accompany you to over one hundred boutiques at the open-air Westfield UTC. Other dog-friendly destinations are Little Italy Mercado and the Original Paw Pleasers Dog Bakery. San Diego’s Old Town State Historic Park is another excellent spot for a stroll and picnic with your best friend.

Seattle, WA – Dog owners in search of accommodations during a stay in The Emerald City will have an easy time of it, because of the vast number of choices. Potential newcomers will discover that hotels, motels, inns, and campgrounds that accept dogs are simple to find. Seattle is also one of only a handful of US cities where dogs are allowed on most modes of public transportation, plus all of the Washington State Ferries. Getting around town is no problem and your pooch is welcome at a fair number of attractions as long as he is leashed and well mannered. The Center for Wooden Boats even allows dogs to accompany their owners to tour the inside exhibits. It will be one adventure after another as you and your pal explore Seattle via an abundant number of water taxis and horse and carriage tours. There’s even a service called Dog Gone Taxi, which offers assistance getting dogs to and from doggie daycare, the vet, groomer, and airport. Of course there are plenty of wide-open spaces for the two of you to enjoy the great outdoors. Boredom will not be a problem, with twelve off leash dog parks and the impressive Sand Point Magnuson Park, an off-leash beach that covers about nine acres.

As you consider relocating to a new city with your best friend, please keep a few things in mind:
-Wherever you visit, always call ahead to get the current facts on their pet policies
-Have at least 2 copies of your pet’s medical records such as proof of shots with you
-Always have a portable water dish and waste bags on hand
