Kayaking On Lake Tahoe
“How do we get in without tipping the whole thing over?”
my friend Rachel asked me as the strong young man was bringing over our kayak and preparing for our launch.
“I have no clue…” I replied.
I was basically trembling, after she put that idea in my head. I didn’t want to tip over! He told us to go “butt first” then put our legs in. Rachel got in first since she was going to be in the back part of our tandem kayak. Then I got in, and he said we were good to go, and he would see us in an hour.
We started laughing so hard because we had no idea how to paddle it.
“Have you ever even been kayaking before?” she asked me
“Yes!” I said defensively
We were laughing, and finally got the hang of it, then I saw a big boat going really fast and started freaking out and yelling at her to paddle away from it so the waves didn’t tip us over. She told me they wouldn’t, and they don’t build the kayaks to tip, they build them to stay afloat. After we hit the first waves, I LOVED it. and wanted more. We started paddling out towards the middle of the lake, all the while making sure we kept an eye on where we started from.
As we got out past all of the anchored boats, and I got over my fear of tipping, we looked back at shore and all I could think was how beautiful it was. It was so peaceful and serene out there, completely quiet with the exception of the water, and the occasional boat or jet ski. How cool was it though, that here we were, sitting on a tiny little piece of plastic on top of water that can reach depths up to 1,645 feet. It was breath taking. We took pictures with the camera we brought wrapped in 5 plastic zip lock bags, very careful not to drop it in the water or get it wet.
My sister Hannah has always been afraid of “rusty anchors” when we were little, and I would laugh at her. But sitting out there, especially when we were around those boats, I got so scared of those so called rusty anchors, and realized she was never taken seriously and maybe she should have been.
It got about 20 minutes to noon, when we were supposed to be back, and so we started paddling back, and make it back with time to spare. The whole experience was fun, hilarious, and beautiful. I wish I could keep that day as wonderful in my memories, but on the way back, still drunk on the peacefulness and sereneness, of the whole thing, I got pulled over for running a stop sign. Which is why I wrote this article. To remember the good things about that day. And it was good. I cannot wait to get back out on that water.
