Ride Where Eagles Dare: Moab’s Slickrock Bike Trail

Every sport has its legendary fields of battle. Big wave surfers have the North Shore. Mountain climbers have K2. And, whitewater kayakers have Zambezi. If you’ve got the guts, the stamina and the skills, Slickrock trail in Moab, Utah is the ultimate mountain bike proving ground.

Even though Slickrock trail measures in at a brief 12 miles, every inch tests you physically and mentally. The almost lunar-looking landscape was formed when the inland oceans that used to cover southeastern Utah dried up, leaving behind petrified beach dunes of Navajo sandstone. Now, the name Slickrock is a real misnomer—the surface of the dunes has the texture of sandpaper, which gives your tires the much-needed traction you’ll need to ascend the hairier sections of the trail (the ones with names like Faith in Friction, Baby Bottom Bowl and Steep Creep). The name Slickrock came from the region’s early settlers whose shoe-clad horses had difficulty traversing the terrain.

And, on the subject of the terrain, it’s steep. Damn steep. Most of the time, you’ll be stuck in your lowest gears, pedaling furiously just to overcome gravity’s relentless downward pull. So, you need to get into shape before you head out to the desert. The next time you’re riding the local routes, push yourself to tackle the tougher, steeper and longer trails—it’s the only way to build up the stamina to conquer Slickrock.

One of biggest hazards of Slickrock is not the trail itself but what surrounds it. Look off in any direction, and your eyes are treated to the sugary visual candy of the surrounding landscape. Petrified sand dunes, stunning rock formations and gorgeous gorges are everywhere. It’s easy to become hypnotized by the natural beauty and stop paying attention to where you’re riding. Next thing you know, you’re flying over your handle bars and sliding cheek first across the coarse dunes. It’s critical that you not get distracted, and there’s one sure-fire technique for improving your focus: take a trip to Manhattan in the summertime and walk around The Village without gazing at all the barely dressed beauties prancing around. If you can survive that challenge, Slickrock will be a cake walk.

Besides preparing your body, you also need to ready your auto for the trip. You can’t bring Moab to your bike, so you need to be capable of bringing your bike to Moab. Most riders prefer to equip their vehicles with a base roof rack. Made up of crossbars and towers that secure to your car’s scalp, a roof rack forms the foundation for installing a bike carrier. Plus, you can mount a cargo carrier to your roof rack, giving you the perfect spot to stash spare parts, extra inner tubes, bike tools and enough granola and trail mix to keep your stomach from growling.

About the Author

If you’re a mountain biker and you’ve got a bucket list, add “Conquer Slickrock” at the top. It’s a grueling 12 mile ride over unforgettable terrain, but it’s also one of the most satisfying rides. But, be prepared and don’t forget to equip your auto with a proper roof rack and cargo carrier to get your gear safely to the trailhead.
