Kayaking and Kids
If you have kids and you love the outdoors then you have likely spent a lot of time near different waterways. Kayaking can be a great way for families to get out on the water and enjoy some summer paddling fun.
You will often see children in rafts or canoes but they can just as easily have fun paddling a kayak either alone or with an adult depending on their age.
If you would like to try kayaking with your family this year then you have two options to consider:
1. Paddling a hard-shell kayak
2. Paddling an Inflatable Kayak
Both make great choices and are fun to use. Which one you decide to purchase will depend on your needs.
Hard-Shell Kayaks
Hard-shells are most common and are known to provide a better performance. They will typically go faster and paddle straighter. They come in a variety of sizes and the price range can vary greatly.
Inflatable Kayaks
I have always found that inflatable’s are ideal for kids and for families. They tend to be a bit wider and have pontoon like sides therefore providing excellent stability and comfort. They are easy to transport in the trunk of your car to any destination so are great to even bring along camping.
Once at your destination of choice they set up in just over five minutes and can be enjoyed by the whole family… even your dog can go along for the ride.
I find that the majority of inflatable kayaks that are constructed today are extremely well made, strong and durable. In my opinion their convenience and ease of use make them a great choice for beginner paddlers looking for an easy way to get outside and enjoy the water.
Choosing the Right Kayak for Your Kids
When choosing which model will suit your kids best consider these three factors:
- weight
- size
- seats
You don’t want it to be so heavy that your kids are not able to at least pull it to shore. The size will determine how it will paddle as well as how much gear can be stored and the number of seats will determine how many people can paddle it at once.
Kayaking can be fun for people of all ages but it is especially great for kids to learn about water safety, paddling a boat and marine wildlife. It is an opportunity for them to accomplish a new recreational sport while having a whole lot of fun at the same time.
The best thing to do before you make your purchase is to read some reviews from people who already have some experience kayaking and then just get out on the water, try it our and create some great family memories.
