Kayaking & Canoeing for Beginners : Guide to Using Canoe Paddles
The entire length of the Great Ocean Road is one highlight after the other
The Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most beautiful drives and is one that should be savored slowly in order to be appreciated completely. Even though it is possible to travel its 150 mile length from Torquay to Allansford in a day, it would be tragic to do so. A much better plan is to spent at least one night at each of two or three strategic locations along the way. The Great Ocean Road is made for travelers, so you won’t have any difficulty finding Great Ocean Road accommodation anywhere you opt to stopover for the night.
Even though Lorne is just a short hop from Torquay, make it your first stop along the Great Ocean Road. For over a hundred years, Lorne has been called one of Australia’s most beautiful towns. People who stay there often comment that it reminds them of a Mediterranean coastal town, but with an Australian feeling. You will know what they mean while you enjoy a cappuccino at a trendy open air cafe and watch everyone enjoying a day in the sun at the beach fronting Loutit Bay.
A good spot to stopover for another night’s rest as you make your way up the Great Ocean Road is Apollo Bay. Situated in the rolling foothills along edge of Cape Otway, Apollo Bay has many attractions that could definitely keep you busy for at least a day, if not longer. Head towards the beach for some waves or just to say “G-day” to the local seals while you go on a guided sea kayak tour. Or you might prefer to go horseback riding on the beach. On the other hand, you may just want to relax and explore the unique shops, cafes and restaurants in and around the town.
Take it slow while you drive through Great Otway National Park. You won’t want to miss a thing in this beautiful wonderland. You will find stands of trees in the park which are hundreds of years old and are the offspring of a species that has been present since prehistoric times. As you pass roadsigns that tell you to watch out for koalas, kangaroos and other native animals, they are not joking. Cape Otway is their home and they love it there. While you’re there, take a side trip right out to the tip of the cape and see one of the oldest lighthouses in the country.
You cannot stop short of the 12 Apostles, near Port Campbell. You no doubt have seen pictures of them before. The 12 Apostles are among Australia’s most photographed sights. Seeing a photo of them does not do them justice, though. You need to see them in person. Aside from just stopping at the side of the road, one way it is possible to see them is by hiking the Great Ocean Walk from Apollo Bay. It is a 64 mile (104kim) walk, though, so its not to be taken lightly. Another great way to see the 12 Apostles is from the air. Stay the night in Port Campbell and book a helicopter trip. It will be a memorable experience.
Believe it or not, there is much more to see and do on the Great Ocean Road than just these few highlighted sights. Really, there is not a boring stretch along the whole road. Give yourself plenty of time to take it all in. After all, you’re on the Great Ocean Road.
