Inflatable Kayaking Q & A

Inflatable kayaks have become extremely popular for many different reasons and with that popularity comes many different questions.  Below are a list of five common questions and answers that are often asked with regards to using an inflatable boat such as a kayak.

IK Q & A

1.How do I clean my IK?

They are very easy to clean.  You can get an inflatable boat cleaner from most inflatable stores that can be used on tough stains such as oil, grass, or dirt.  Or you can use any natural all purpose cleaner as well.  The important thing is to avoid cleaners with harsh chemicals as these can compromise the quality of the material.

2. How long do inflatable’s last?
The length of time it lasts will depend on the quality of the model you purchased as well as how well you take care of it.  The cheaper models tend to not have the same high quality and sturdy material as the higher priced models.  However it is very possible to get an excellent quality Inflatable Kayak or canoe for a very affordable price.

The trick is to not leave it out where it is constantly exposed to the elements as this will weaken the material.  You can also protect the material with a 303 protectant spray that will help keep it safe from UV rays and exposure to the elements.  Most models will last a very long time.

3. How do I protect the kayak material?
As stated above a UV protectant spray is the best way to prolong the life of the material.  A bottle of protectant spray is very cheap and lasts an extremely long time.  Just spray it on every couple of months, wipe off and know that your inflatable is protected.

4. How should I store my IK?
Inflatables are extremely convenient in that they are able to be stored away in small spaces.  When you are finished using it, just make sure to completely dry it out with a towel, deflate, fold up and store in its storage bag (each model comes with its own storage bag).  Then store it away in a dry and cool space.  The most important thing is to keep it away from direct exposure to the elements such as sunlight or rain.

5. What do I do if my IK has a leak?
A pin hole leak is very easy to repair and only takes a few minutes.  Each model will come with its own repair kit complete with patch and glue.  Follow the instructions that come with your repair kit and allow the glue to dry.  A small leak is easily patched up with the extra material provided.

If you are concerned that you may have a leak coming from somewhere other than a small tear such as around the seams or valves, then you can do a quick spray test.  Use a spray bottle with a soapy solution and spray all around those areas.  If you see bubbles anywhere that means there is a leak.  Once again follow the instructions in your repair kit and patch it up. 

If you get a major leak that is not fixable with your repair kit then you can either contact the manufacturer or take your inflatable down to your local kayak or boat store for help.

Inflatable kayaks are extremely fun to paddle and convenient to own.  There are many different models to choose from so it is important to read reviews before you buy to make sure you get the best one to suit your needs.
