Kayaking With Kids
The greatest advantage of kayaking is that it can be taken up by anyone in any form. For e.g. paddlers who want to experience the adrenalin rush of riding on gushing rapids and swift currents can practice whitewater kayaking while those who want to enjoy a calm and peaceful ride on a lake or sea, can opt for flatwater kayaking. Also, with proper preparations, kayaking can even be practiced by children as young as 8 years or 10 years old. Kids younger than this can always hop in with their parents and have fun.
Tips for Kayaking with Kids
With little arrangement in the kayak, parents can easily take along their young kids or even babies for a ride. If parents have kayaks with a larger cockpit, babies and kids up to three or four years can easily be accommodated on the lap. This is the best way to acquaint young kids to the thrills of kayaking. This gives the children the sense of security along with the fun of riding the waves in the kayaks.
Yet another method of taking kids along can be in a baby car seat. Parents simply need to plant the baby car seats in the kayak and they are all set to take their tiny tots along. However, not all car seats can be used for these purposes and it is vital to verify the floatation of the seat before using it.
As the kids grow up and can handle the small paddle, they can be positioned in the rear hatch of the kayak facing the stern. With this arrangement, kids can paddle on their own without getting in the way of the parent’s paddle strokes. While using a sit-on-top kayak, it is necessary to use a leash. Leashes are important as the paddlers – adults and kids only need to hold on to their paddles in case the kayak capsizes.
It is advisable that if the kids are too young, then parents first take them for flatwater kayaking. As kids get familiar with the various features of the activity, they can gradually transition to whitewater kayaking, starting with small rapids. Also, parents must ensure that they secure their children with proper fitting PFDs, wetsuits, sun protection and shoes while taking them along.
Owning a Kayak
By the age of seven or eight years, children long for their own kayak. With the right guidance, children can master kayaking within no time. When kids start kayaking in separate kayaks, it is always a good idea to keep a tow line ready. Kayaking requires a great deal of strength to paddle and children can get exhausted very quickly.
Thus, in such situations, their kayaks can be hooked on to their parents’ kayaks with the help of the tow line. This would allow the children to continue the session without getting too tired. With regular practice, children can easily learn the most difficult techniques and become expert kayakers.
Kayaking with kids is a memorable experience and a great way to enjoy quality family time.
