Whitewater Kayak Gear : What Kayaks are Used in Whitewater Kayaking
Whitewater Kayaking Gear
When whitewater kayaking, it is essential to have the proper equipment for the task. If you don’t have the right items with you, may find yourself in situations that could be uncomfortable or hazardous to your overall well-being. Hurling down a river at great speeds can be unforgiving, but you can greatly enhance your chances of safety and enjoyment when you equip yourself with the proper items. If you are going to be headed out on the river, you may want to have the following items with you.
First and foremost, you need to have a helmet. The implications of not having a helmet can be extremely hazardous. If you get hurled off-course in your kayak, and hit your head on a boulder, log, or anything else, you will not win the confrontation.
Second, you must have a life jacket. Just as important as the helmet, if you fall in, you need to stay above water, plain and simple. A life jacket will allow you to do this. Make sure when you are selecting the life jacket that you try it on. It needs to be comfortable, snug, and serve it’s purpose all at the same time. You can’t select a proper life jacket without trying it on and making sure it is functiol.
When you are whitewater kayaking, you may also want to consider purchasing a spray skirt. A spray skirt is an item that is made of waterproof material and keeps your kayak from becoming flooded and sinking you whenever you may dip under water. The spray skirt does this by wrapping tightly around the coaming of the cockpit of the kayak, and also going snugly around your waist (hence the ‘skirt’). This creates a waterproof seal that will not allow water to overtake you.
Finally, a paddle leash is always a good idea when you are kayaking in whitewater. You never know what situation may arise and you could have your paddle torn out of your grasp. A paddle leash will keep you from losing your paddle all-together. The leash attaches to your paddle, and to your wrist, it’s as simple as that.
There are many other items that you may also want to think about, but these past few are basically whitewater kayaking necessities. Depending on conditions, or the level of your kayaking, you may want to consider a dry or wet suit, booties, bilge pump, or dry boxes, just as a few examples.
